Career Description
The individual in this position will act as an entry or mid-level engineer and will provide assistance to administration of the programs of the Department of Water Resource's Regulatory Division. The Engineer performs a wide variety of duties associated with water resource management and regulation.
Duties and Tasks
Review submittals and prepare written recommendations for complex civil and water resources related projects.Complete engineering analyses, calculations, and site investigations to support recommendations.Assume project management duties of permit application reviews for levees, dikes, flood control projects, drainage projects, water-related complaints and appeals, and other water resource determinations.Provide assistance, education, and outreach to the general public, political subdivisions, and other agencies, as well as engineering and legal professionals regarding North Dakota's water resource regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
Water Resource Engineer I Requires a bachelor's degree in one of the following fields or disciplines: water resources, civil, agricultural, environmental, or geotechnical engineering, or other closely associated field as determined by the department.*"A bachelor's degree in a closely associated field" qualification is subject to Department discretion and engineering licensure requirements.See: https://ndpelsboard.org/professionals/license-requirements/Coursework or experience in water resources, such as hydrology and hydraulics.Strong oral and written communication skills.Must be able and willing to travel as necessary.Water Resource Engineer II Must meet minimum qualifications for Engineer I and;2 years or more of relevant experience by the end of an up to one year probationary period.An advanced degree in a closely associated field (masters or doctorate) may be counted as one year of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Surface water hydrology and hydraulics experience. GIS experience including ArcGIS or other platforms.Water resource modeling skills. Engineer Intern (EI) certification.Experience working in a regulatory capacity.Public speaking experience.
